Spontaneous combustion of the human body has been widely accepted as impossible. People generally don't just burst into flames for no reason. This fact serves as the premise for the trilling Kung-fu mystery adventure that is Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. The soon to be first female empress of china Wu Zetian, calls upon the unparalleled wisdom of a man she herself previously exiled; the titular detective Dee Renjie. She hopes that he will be able to solve the case of these "Phantom Flame" murders before her coronation occurs, or her own life is taken by the blazing inferno. Directed by Hark Tsui (Seven Swords) choreographed by stunt-director Sammo Hung (Ip man) and featuring Andy Lau (warlords along side Jet Li).

Hailed by NY magazine as "Crouching Tiger meets Sherlock Holmes... only a LOT MORE FUN", this film melds some of the biggest names in martial arts movies into one cohesive heart pounding thriller that won't disappoint. Check out the official trailer below and head over to the film's official website for screens and more information on the film.

Review: Din's Curse: Demon War

Din's Curse: Demon War is an action RPG, similar to games like Diablo 2 and Titan Quest. It's technically an expansion set for the PC and Mac game, Din's Curse, but this review will cover the original game and the content added in the expansion. This is a game that sticks to what matters most: gameplay. It isn't a graphical or sound powerhouse by any means, albeit still pretty good looking. The game doesn't have fancy CG cutscenes or a Hollywood presentation. But who cares? It's some of the most fun I've had in years, and it lasts practically forever.

When you start this game up, you're given the choice between a decent amount of classes. Warrior, rogue, priest, wizard, ranger, conjurer, and the newly added demon hunter. The game also allows you to choose the Hybrid class, which allows you to create a custom class by choosing two talent trees from any of the classes. Soldak Entertainment, the developers of this game, claim that there are 196 total combinations. This is a very interesting addition to a game like this, and it's something that will please old school PC RPG fans, and add more hours to this game's hefty replay value. Before starting, the game gives you an impressive amount of options to toggle the difficulty in various ways. There's the standard Hardcore option that makes death permanent and limits your character's item stash.

A new Xbox Live Indie Game is being developed, but so are many others. What makes this game so special? It's a co-op shooter controlled solely by microphones, and you fire by saying that magic phrase.

Magicka Review

There aren't a lot of games that are both entertaining and cheap, but Arrowhead Game Studios managed to bring us just that.

Thu Tran, Babycastles Joint Display

Last Friday a small indie arcade in Ridgewood, Queens, Babycastles, opened a joint display with the artist Thu-Tran at 217 42nd Street. This display was not only art like in a museum or gallery. It was very interactive, with things ranging from comfy chair art to indie video games (some of which you might know like Bit Trip Runner on the Wii or Canabalt, a flash game popular on Kongregate). During that very eventful Friday there was an estimated turnout of 200 people. Kinda makes you wonder where I was, when there was a major gaming event on the night of Comic Con.

You missed a lot if you weren't there though, including an awesome crowd of people many of which are regulars, not hipsters, who will talk about the anything and even start impromptu games like pass the mannequin hand. You also missed the chance to see fine modern art. To give you the gist it was a crowded arcade with people all over but there were very short lines for the games. Don't fret, there is still a chance to see it. The gallery is usually open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 8 pm (and they're open later when there are special events). Babycastles is planning on staying open for three months. Each month will feature a different co-host. They also plan for a new set of games every two weeks.

Check out photos from the exhibit in the photo gallery below the jump!

Lungs of a Machine

Steadily gaining huge popularity in the United States, Florence and the Machine gained mainstream success in the UK, and their album, Lungs reached No. 1 on the UK music charts in the beginning of 2010.

Let me tell you, this is one of my favorite indie bands so far. Comprised of Florence Welch, and a backing band (members depend on the song), her raw vocals resonate throughout the album, better than a lot of albums where you like only a couple of songs and the rest are forgettable. One of the songs, "Kiss with a Fist" was on Jennifer's Body soundtrack.
