A little while back we revealed that Nintendo was planning on revealing their new gaming console at this years Electronic Entertainment Expo. Nintendo wasn't bluffing. At this years E3 they revealed their new system the Wii U. While the name feels unoriginal, the system itself is certainly innovative. For a while now people have been saying that while the Wii is the "family" gaming system, it really doesn't have much to offer the hardcore gamer. That's all about to change as Nintendo's new console has achieved 1080p, that's right it's fully capable of HD images and as such is able to battle it out on equal ground with the Playstation 3 and X-box 360. However as good as it is to hear, the HD capability is not the main selling point of the Wii U. Rather it's the controller that seems to steal the spotlight from the actual console itself.

The Wii U's controller is a tablet device which features:

  • A front facing Camera
  • Speakers
  • Microphone
  • Two circle pads
  • A gyroscope
  • An accelerometer
  • All of the buttons featured on the Wii's classic controller

While all of those features are cool, none of them are nearly as innovative as this last one. The Wii U controller features a 6.2 inch touch screen. This screen allows the user to draw on it, video chat with it, and of course play Wii U games on it. Now you need to be in range of the console to play the games on the controller, but it frees up the T.V for someone else to watch while you play your game. Being able to instantly switch from controller to T.V is extremely freeing, but that's not all the controller is good for. Its also capable of changing how you interact with the game depending on how you angle it. So far it's been shown to be used in accurate sniping, an extra information display so that you don't have to switch screens when playing certain games, and even placed on the ground to create a more real life experience when playing Wii golf.

The system is fully backwards compatible with all Wii games, software, controllers, and downloadable content. It's slated for a 2012 release, and it's already gotten the interest of major 3rd party developers, with confirmed titles such as

  • Lego City Stories
  • Tekken (working title)
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge
  • Assassins Creed (working title)
  • Ghost Recon Online
  • Aliens: Colonial Marines
  • Darksiders II
  • Pikmin 3
  • Super Smash Bro's (working title)

In short Nintendo's Wii U. There's simply nothing like it.

The control scheme doesn't look really good.

It's kind of ironic that investors were disappointed enough at the announcement that Nintendo's stock fell.

Personally I'm kind of curious about the Wii U especially since its chipset was designed by IBM.
