Namco-Bandai is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Tales series, and what a lucky year it is for tales fans. As part of the grand celebration Namco-Bandai have released budget(discounted) versions of Tales of Phantasia (PSP), Tales of Eternia (PSP), Tales of Destiny (PSP), Tales of ReBirth (PSP), Tales of Vesperia (PS3) and Tales of Graces (PS3). Of course that alone wouldn't be worthy of a Tales celebration. To really spice things up all of the games have a custom 15th anniversary sleeve, which unlocks a theme in their latest addition to the series Tales of Xillia.
Their latest game is their coup de grace of the celebration. Featuring a unique new art style that focuses on the contrast between light and shadow, and it renders beautifully. The arena system returns so players can enjoy testing their reflexes and skills fighting the myriad of enemies it has to offer. A fan favorite feature of Vesperia also makes an appearance. The attachment system has been tweaked to allow players to modify the attachments. From where the attachment is placed, to how large it is, and even what color the attachment will be, all of these details are controlled by the player. Of course it wouldn't be a Tales game without changeable outfits. They've got the classic swimsuit wear, formal wear, school outfits, outfits related to the games lore, and of course to ring in the 15th year of tales games right, costumes of previous Tales game characters.
Not much is known about the storyline but we do know the female lead, Milla, is "the Maxwell." Fans of the series know Maxwell is the summon spirit in charge of the 4 elements, a fact which seems to play a large part to her back-story. The infamous spirit cannon makes a return as well, though this incarnation seems to drain the energy of living beings, rather than channeling the power of the spirits. The game was one point short of a perfect score receiving a 10/9/10/10 from Famitsu, and while its release is exclusive to Japan with a score like that it might make its way to our shores sooner than we think. Check out the trailer to see a piece a history in the making.
Tales fans rejoice, you'll soon get a chance to play Namco-Bandai's critically acclaimed Tales of the Abyss, in 3D. The company has promised to re-release the Playstation 2 hit in Japan on the new Nintendo 3DS system. What's even better than that though is that North America will be receiving a port of the game this fall. So whether you're a die hard fan hoping to pick up the all the cel-shaded nostalgia this game holds or someone completely new to the series, one things for sure if you've got a 3DS and are a fan of RPG's this is one title you don't want to miss.
