Written by

Suddenly you are plunged into the future time of your own country. It all seems strange and confusing, but very interesting at the same time. Now, how about if genderbent versions of prominent historical figures of the Sengoku era showed up in present times? You may ask, “How would they cope with life?”. Well, the anime Sengoku Collection will gladly answer all of these questions and more! Sengoku Collection aired from April 6, 2012 to September 28, 2012 and was produced by animation studio Brain’s Base (who have done notable works such as: Baccano!, Spice and Wolf II, and Durarara!!).

Plot: Starting off with one of the most well known people of the Sengoku Period, Oda Nobunaga is suddenly transported to present day Japan right before falling into the flames of her burning castle. After a day of adventuring and learning about her new surroundings, she finds out she can get back home by collecting the secret treasures from other people in her era that have also been transported to modern times. With this new-found knowledge, Oda Nobunaga sets out to take the secret treasures of the other notable Sengoku Period figures to return back home. Nobunaga’s quest is the foundation of the plot for Sengoku Collection, but the show is really more about showcasing the different personalities of characters in the anime and what kind of lives they have within the present. Sengoku Collection does not have an extraordinary plot, but makes up for it with having different stories in each episode for all the characters, which tend to be fun and enjoyable to watch.

Characters: Boasting an impressive cast of characters, Sengoku Collection has a diverse cast that mangages to be wholly entertaining. While these characters do not receive much depth due to how the plot is structured, they are all distinct from each other and have unique traits that make them amusing to watch. The voice actresses (some are very notable like: Nakahara Mai, Satou Rina, and Hanazawa Kana) all do a great job at bringing personality to the characters.

Art and Animation: Scenes in Sengoku Collection are animated well and carry no glaring detractors. While the backgrounds of show are relatively simple and do not have much detail, the attractive and exotic character designs make up for it.

Music: There is not much to say about the Sengoku Collection soundtrack. It is a basic soundtrack that fits well with the scenes and mood of the show. On the other hand, the anime does have a nicely done opening and ending song, along with a nice insert song by Hanazawa Kana.

Sengoku Collection - Masamune Date and Kojuurou Katakura

Overall: For those looking for a fun and enjoyable show to pass the time, Sengoku Collection will be able to offer you what you are looking for. With how the plot is structured, viewers can easily pick up and watch the show whenever they want, making it an easy to show for viewing at your leisure. Above all, Sengoku Collection may not be the most amazing anime of its season, but it is definitely well done and worth taking a look at. It also has some yuri undertones for any yuri fans who might be interested.
